First Lady Honors South Carolina Mother of the Year Mrs. Deane Rast Risher Honored at the Statehouse; Welcomed to the Governor’s Mansion
Columbia, S.C. – Tuesday, March 9, 2004 – First Lady Jenny welcomes the South Carolina Mother of the Year, Mrs. Deane Rast Risher, to the Governor’s Mansion this afternoon. Following the presentation of the certificate and pin at the Statehouse, Mrs. Risher will be hosted by Mrs. Sanford and the South Carolina Mother of the Year Search Committee at a tea by invitation only at the Governor’s Mansion.
South Carolina Mother of the Year, Mrs. Deane Rast Risher of Camden, is the 62nd to be named to this honor. Mrs. Risher is a graduate of Winthrop College and has spent much of her life supporting her husband and her five daughters. After several years spent in active military duty, Lieutenant Risher moved his family to start Camden Military Academy. Through her involved work as a “mother away from home” to the thousands of young cadets who have attended Camden Military Academy, her dedication to her community and faith, and her love for her family, Mrs. Deane Rast Risher is a deserving recipient of this special honor.
“Honoring our mothers is something we take special note of today but it’s something that ought to never be far from our thoughts,” Gov. Sanford said. “I’ve been blessed with an amazing mother who has been someone I’ve counted on throughout my life, and Jenny has been simply a remarkable role model for mothers as she and I have raised our four little boys together. Our family joins families throughout South Carolina in saluting Mrs. Risher as our state’s Mother of the Year, and we’d encourage folks to take a moment and thank their mothers for everything they’ve done to make our lives better.”
Each year since 1942 an outstanding mother in the Palmetto State has been selected as South Carolina Mother of the Year. She is chosen by a search committee from nominees submitted from all across the state. The annual Convention of American Mothers will be held in Puerto Rico when this year’s American Mother of the Year will be announced.
