First Lady Jenny Sanford to Participate in Susan G. Komen Lowcountry Race for the Cure

Columbia, S.C. – Thursday, October 15, 2009 – First Lady Jenny Sanford today announced she will participate in the 16th annual Susan G. Komen Lowcountry Race for the Cure on Saturday morning (October 17, 2009). The 5k run/walk will begin at 9:10 a.m. at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island, SC. Long an advocate of cancer prevention and member of the Hollings Cancer Center Advisory Committee at the Medical University of South Carolina, Mrs. Sanford will walk the race alongside her sister, Kathy Sullivan, and the Roper St. Francis Cancer Center Team.

“I’m looking forward to being a part of another Komen Race for the Cure,” Mrs. Sanford said. “Many of us have been touched by someone with breast cancer, and this race is a great way to honor those we’ve lost and encourage those battling breast cancer today. It’s also a reminder of the vital role good nutrition, regular physical activity, knowing the risk factors, and getting checked often have in reducing one’s chances of getting cancer. I very much look forward to joining survivors and supporters alike in a good cause as we raise funds to help others in our community.”

The Roper St. Francis Cancer Center Team has over 175 participants including Dr. Genny Hay, professor in the School of Education at the College of Charleston and one-year breast cancer survivor. Dr. Hay is thankful to Roper, as well as the Komen Foundation, for providing support during her battle with breast cancer – especially given her mother, also a breast cancer survivor, faced the disease without Komen’s resources and support.

“I am excited to celebrate my one-year cancer survivorship by participating in the race on Saturday with Jenny,” Hay said. “I support Komen because of the awareness it promotes and the funds it raises for those who can’t afford treatment.” For more information about Komen for the Cure or breast cancer and health, visit www.komen.org or call 1.877 GO KOMEN®.
